Bullying & Sexual Harassment

Unacceptable workplace behaviour in the form of bullying and harassment is increasingly making the headlines every day.

Costs to organisations in terms of lost productivity, absenteeism, staff turnover, legal costs, damages, workers compensation  . . . have put the expense to the Australian economy between $6 billion and $36 billion.

In the past, harassed individuals would leave a toxic work environment. Today there are more and new avenues for employees to stay and make a claim and get compensation.
So here are several MUSTS for organisations, managers, Directors, the Board, supervisors . . .

  •        Policies and procedures must be in place, and implemented.
  •        All staff need training in what is inappropriate and appropriate behaviour
  •        Responsibilities and liabilities of inappropriate behaviour for individuals as well as the organisation
  •        Basic knowledge of the legislation
  •        Record details of behaviours, responses, training, attendance at training . . .
  •        Assertive skills: what to say and how to say it, to stop unacceptable behaviour.  Ideally to ‘nip it in the bud’ so it doesn’t grow and spread.
3 key ways to encourage people to change their unacceptable behaviour

  •       You, the manager / leader / supervisor / team player, must model the behaviour you want to see
  •       Educate and inform about the costs and consequences of unacceptable behaviour
  •       Encourage exploration of the benefits and rewards of acceptable behaviours / best practice.
With Sydney University Centre for Continuing Education Yvonne runs a one day workshop to help you open your eyes to new legal avenues available to employees, steps you must take to reduce risks of claims, and allow you to learn and practice assertive skills, what to say and how to say it.
Yvonne also runs in-house workshops from 2 hours – 1 day and coaches 1:1 in assertive skills.

Wishing you a safe, fair and productive workplace.
Enjoy.
